Cold Honest Truth

people-2591838_1920

“I don’t view that résumé as negative. I see it as an honest description. It may be a cold description, but it’s a mere truth. It is neither positive or negative. They’re just 2D words and the real you is a complicated, 3D being.”

“You’re not making me feel better”

“What do you want me to say? I’m trying to put this in the most honest way I can.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t see it as a flattering portrayal of me.”

“But you said it! They are your words. Why don’t we just rephrase them?”

“Because they are the truth.”

She stood before him with her hands in the back pockets of her denim cut offs. She wore a little tank top that accentuated what she had. Her behavior could be defined as antsy. She squirmed a bit too much. It was flirtatious without any intent. She was ripe to be taken advantage of. He realized all this. He tried his best to keep his focus on her eyes and the subject at hand. But they were beautiful green eyes…

“Look, I’m not going to sit here and go over everything that is positive about you. You know most of what I’m going to say anyway. I know you’re smart enough and have been hit on enough.”

“I’m not trying to get compliments out of you. I just don’t believe you.”

“You don’t have to believe me. In fact, your opinion doesn’t matter at all. The only opinion that matters is that of the guy who is lucky enough to get chosen by you.”

“No one is wanting me to choose them, as you say.”

“Just stop. Please, just stop.”

“What?”

“I’m trying to figure out if you’re innocent enough to believe your own words.”

“I’m not lying!”

“I didn’t say you were. You just have a block to where you can’t see the real you and the good things about you.”

“I think I could agree with that.”

“Good, then just listen to me and believe what I have to say.”

She looked back at him, trying to see something in his face. She wanted to find the secret to how he could see so much good in her. It was polar opposite to her own reflection. It amazed her that he could see past all her flaws and find what it was that he locked into.

“I’ll try.” She released a loud breath of pent up frustration. It was as if she let the burden of her own self doubt go. She would do her best to think positively and embrace her assets.

Cold Coffee & A Stash Of Lost Dreams

sunglasses-3352289_1920.jpg

Cold coffee & a stash of lost dreams
A distant memory of those rail yards
But we weren’t ourselves with honesty
Not the renegades or anything that hard
Images of what we might yet become
Grabbing self-regard before it fades
Destroying their notions of modernism
Returning to simpler times & dark shades
We all have our morbid skeletons
The vague semblance of a broken soul
But somewhere are the clues to the truth
Somewhere when lightning meets a weary, old skull

Listening To These Harrowing Winds

naked-2567510.jpg

Listening to these harrowing winds
I sure miss kissing your ruby lips
I’m cold these days; alone
Dreaming of holding your naked hips
That’s where my hands need to be
Memories of your perfect back arched
Seeing the outline of your love
Leaves my mouth permanently parched

Watching The Condensation Seep Into The Desk

Watching the condensation seep into the desk
I think of the glories that have gone away
The ice melting/mixing into my single malt
I’ve been nervous, but I’m okay by the end of the day
These days weren’t the ones we’ve been dreaming of
Idealistic thoughts when we were on foreign shores
Imagining celebrities dancing inter formalwear
Fancy & festive role models displayed forevermore
Upon the big screen & locked into our minds
Americana lost & the golden age of Hollywood
Stoking the passion of our fervid imaginations
Inspiring our dreams like nothing else ever could
Our hopes & desires abandoned & hung out to dry
Stark realization our fantasies are mere celluloid
The cold night, withering on the streets alone
Upon the credits, leaving the theater broke & into the void

Language Is Always Swirling In My Mind

coffee-2563838_1920.jpg

Language is always swirling in my mind

Concept of creativity begins to protrude

Coffee poured into lonely & cold crockery

Enhancing feelings of morning’s solitude

I feel there’s a fluid density to my dreams

Where it’s not easy for them to dissolve

Our actions lead us into raw perpetuity

Organically replayed as the earth revolves

Standing back, removing yourself from here

You find living takes a certain concentration

Happiness requires focus and some effort

But gratitude never achieves complete saturation

Carefully Chosen Sentence Structures

Carefully chosen sentence structures

The love of words keeping you from the cold

Bundled in that threadbare cardigan

But you never allowed your spirit to be sold

The world wishes to destroy your soul

& watch gleefully as you wither & cry

But as long as you keep on writing

You’ll learn that you can never really die

The Coat

“Where’s my coat? Who took my coat?”

“I don’t know. Mike’s at the store, maybe he did.”

“I gotta go. I need my coat.”

“Relax man, he’ll be right back.”

“You’re not understanding. I’m going to be late. He has his own jacket.”

“Chill man, he’ll be right back.”

“Why didn’t he use his own?”

“I don’t know. Why are you freaking out?”

“This is bullshit! I gotta go, man!”

“I’ll lend you mine. It’s cool.”

“I can’t wear that! I’m in a suit! What’s wrong with you?

“Check this out, man, mine is here.  It’ll keep you warm. It’s your choice.”

“I gotta go. My boss won’t understand that my stupid roommate took my jacket to the store real quick.”

“Dude, I’m done with this conversation. Take mine or don’t.”

“What is wrong with people that they can’t wear their own clothes?  Why does everyone need to impede on me?”

“It’s not all about YOU!”

“How the fuck is my jacket being taken by someone else without permission at the exact moment when I need it most, not about me? Can you explain that one to me?”

With that he walked out to his car without a coat. He was shivering by the time he got in his car. He kept reminding himself to get the autostart to get the engine warmed up before we walked out. Now he would have to freeze in only his suit until the heat was ready. Each moment he shivered, he hatred for Mike further increased. He was seething before he felt any heat at all.

False Attempts At The Old Scottish Jig

scotland-1987599_1920.jpg

False attempts at the old Scottish jig
Distant past lingering – nothing wise
She was never the heroine you always needed
Finally gave up after all those tries
Beauty’s eye was never truly blind
Having been lied to, left you distraught
Perpetual cycles now cold & mean
Never the quality you had always thought
Smile inward, you are the crowned victor
Playing their game with the cards dealt
Karma worms its way into a deserving soul
They’ll never know how your true love felt

Scars & Flaws Mark Our Character

IMG_1485.jpg

Scars & flaws mark our character
There are no monuments upon the sea
With no footprints in the waves
We cling to adventure in order to be free
But we all too soon grow old
The cold days along the Scottish coast
Searching for the proper port
To be comfortable with our dubious host
These days we’re looking to break even
I feel each of my years in my bones
I embrace my Saint Brendan’s medal
Within the night shift I can quietly atone
Remembering the light within her eyes
Reflecting up into the midnight’s moon
There’s a lot we might misconstrue
We’re stained, but maybe we can learn the tune
